New project: Digital evidence, blockchain, and air-strikes in Yemen
The Saudi-led Coalition is accused of committing systematic war crimes against civilians in Yemen. There exists a wealth of evidence in support of these claims, including media reports, citizen evidence, digital open source information and NGO reports.
GLAN, with research support from Pro Bono Matters at the London School of Economics and student placements at NUI Galway's School of Law, has begun drawing together the existing best practice for dealing with digital evidence in the context of the prosecution of international crimes.
Reliance on open-source and other digital evidence is a significant challenge to accountability efforts. To promote confidence in the evidence gathering process GLAN is consulting with a number of experts, institutions and investigative journalists on the creation of an database supported by blockchain technology. The project will be formally launched later this year.
