Trustee Opportunities

Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) are currently looking for new Trustees to join their existing Board!

This is an opportunity for you to bring your skills and experience to support a charity that works in partnership with affected communities to pursue innovative legal actions to challenge powerful actors involved in human rights violations and systemic injustice.

We are a supportive and welcoming organisation with a team of committed and inspirational people, passionate about human rights.

What are we looking for?

We are looking to strengthen our board with 4 new trustees, with specific skills and experience in Governance, Digital Innovation, PR/Communications or Proceeds of Crime Legal expertise

.

Governance Trustee – You will have experience of charity governance, supporting organisations to monitor quality and organisational compliance to ensure that regulatory requirements are met, and that best practice is applied. You will guide our trustee board and senior management team on good charity governance and legal duties.

Digital Innovation Trustee - You will have experience of supporting organisations with maturing their digital applications and practices for future growth, sustainability, and resilience. Some expertise and a strong interest in the use of artificial intelligence both in optimising the operational effectiveness of GLAN and how AI can be deployed in benefiting our clients’ legal cases, would be advantageous. GLAN has been a pioneer in the development and use of open source and user generated material in client cases, where AI is a very relevant issue.

PR/Communications Trustee – You will have experience of supporting organisations with the development of a communications and public relations strategy that will allow GLAN to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences including the media and key influencers. You will advise trustees and staff on recognising internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

Legal Trustee – You will ensure GLAN’s compliance with UK charity law and help manage other legal risks, conflicts of interest, crisis management and review of contracts. A background in Proceeds of Crime would be desirable in the context of GLAN fostering the development of GLAN’s innovative work in this area in the context of environmental destruction and human rights. You will have experience applying the UK’s Proceeds of Crime Act and related regulations as a barrister, solicitor, or within law enforcement.  

 

All Trustee Responsibilities:

Trustees have a duty to ensure that the charity is well run, solvent, legally compliant, and working towards the charitable purpose for which it was established, and Trustee roles are an important and highly rewarding way to support an organisation.

 

Please note that Trustee roles are unremunerated voluntary positions.

Expected Time Commitment/Activities:

You will participate in quarterly board meetings, and one subcommittee, providing expert guidance and support on your area of expertise. You will also support the Executive Director, staff members and fellow board members, as may be needed.

Expected time commitment would be approximately 6 hours per month.

Board Meetings:

Board meetings are usually held in person, but you can also join remotely. Subcommittee meetings are usually held remotely.

In person meetings would normally be held in London.

  • 16 April 2024 4pm-6pm GMT (In person or remote)

  • 16 July 2024 4pm-6pm GMT (In person or remote)

  • 8 October 2024 4pm-6pm GMT (In person or remote)
